The Commoditization of Expertise: Why Knowing Things Is No Longer Enough
AI can now answer most questions as well as most experts. Here is what that means for knowledge workers and what the new competitive advantage looks like.

The Uncomfortable Truth
For most of the past century, expertise was scarce. If you knew something that most people did not know, you could build a career around that knowledge. The doctor knew medicine; the lawyer knew law; the consultant knew strategy.
AI has disrupted this model more fundamentally than any previous technology. Not because AI knows more — but because AI makes knowledge accessible instantly to everyone.
When a client can get a competent answer to a strategic question from an AI in 30 seconds, the value of "having the answer" drops toward zero.
What Remains Irreplaceable
The skills that AI cannot replicate are the ones that cannot be separated from human judgment, relationship, and context:
Taste: The ability to recognize what is good, relevant, and right for a specific situation — not in the abstract, but in the specific context of this client, this industry, this moment.
Accountability: Someone who will stand behind their advice and be there when the execution gets complicated. AI gives recommendations; experts own outcomes.
Relationship capital: The trust, network, and political intelligence that come from decades of working in a specific domain. This cannot be trained out of a dataset.
Original frameworks: Synthesizing novel frameworks from experience that do not yet exist in training data. The consultant who codifies a new way of thinking about a problem creates something AI cannot duplicate.
The Implication for Knowledge Workers
Compete on what you know less. Compete more on how you think, who you are, and what you have built through experience.
The knowledge workers who will thrive in the next decade are the ones who stop positioning themselves as experts with answers and start positioning themselves as partners in navigation — guiding clients through complexity that requires judgment, not information.
