The Segmentation Strategy That Doubled My Email Open Rates

Sending every email to your entire list is the single biggest mistake in email marketing. Segmentation is the fix — and it is simpler than you think.

The Broadcast Problem

Most email marketers send every email to every subscriber. One list, one campaign, one set of results.

This approach produces average results at best — because different subscribers are in different situations, have different interests, and are at different stages of their relationship with you.

Segmentation sends different messages to different groups. The same send, optimized for each audience.

The 4 Segments Every Consultant Needs

Segment 1: New subscribers (0–30 days) Your welcome sequence runs here. These are your highest-engagement subscribers and deserve the most attention. Never send them broadcast campaigns while they are in the welcome sequence.

Segment 2: Engaged subscribers (opened in last 60 days) Your core audience. Send everything here. These people are reading and interested.

Segment 3: Warm but lapsed (no open in 60–180 days) Reduce send frequency. Send only your best content. Run a re-engagement campaign every 90 days.

Segment 4: Cold subscribers (no open in 180+ days) Do not send regular campaigns here. Run one re-engagement sequence. If they do not respond, remove them. Keeping them hurts your deliverability and skews your metrics.

Simple Segmentation by Interest

Beyond engagement, segment by interest using link clicks. If a subscriber clicks on every email about LinkedIn but ignores everything about SEO, tag them as "LinkedIn interested" and send them more of what they engage with.

Most email platforms support click-based tagging. Once set up, it runs automatically.

The Results

Consultants who implement basic segmentation consistently see: 15–30% higher open rates, 20–40% higher click rates, and meaningfully lower unsubscribe rates — because the right people are getting the right content.
