Google Analytics 4: What Consultants Actually Need to Know

GA4 is different from Universal Analytics in ways that matter for how you make marketing decisions. Here is a practical guide to the metrics that drive decisions.

The GA4 Transition Reality

Google completed the Universal Analytics to GA4 migration, and many marketers are still finding GA4 confusing. The interface is different, familiar metrics have been renamed or restructured, and the event-based model requires rethinking what you measure.

For consultants who use analytics primarily to understand content performance and lead generation, most of GA4's complexity is irrelevant. Here is what actually matters.

The Key GA4 Metrics for Content Marketers

Engaged Sessions (replaces Sessions + Bounce Rate): An engaged session is one where the visitor spent more than 10 seconds, viewed at least 2 pages, or triggered a conversion event. This is a better content quality signal than page views or bounce rate.

Engagement Rate (replaces Bounce Rate, inverted): The percentage of sessions that were engaged. Above 50% is a positive signal for content pages.

Average Engagement Time: How long engaged users spent on your site. For content-heavy sites, above 2 minutes per session suggests visitors are genuinely reading.

Events: GA4 tracks everything as events. The events that matter for consultants: page views, scroll depth (did they read the whole article?), link clicks to lead magnets, and form submissions.

Setting Up the Conversions That Matter

The most valuable GA4 setup for a content-driven consulting business:

  1. Mark form submission (contact, newsletter signup) as a conversion event
  2. Mark lead magnet download as a conversion event
  3. Mark discovery call booking as a conversion event

With these three conversion events properly configured, you can see which content, which traffic sources, and which keywords are producing actual business outcomes — not just page views.

The One Report to Check Monthly

Reports → Life Cycle → Acquisition → Traffic Acquisition. This shows which channels (organic search, direct, social, email) are driving the most engaged sessions and conversions. This single report tells you where to invest more and where to pull back.
