Internal Linking Strategy: The SEO Tactic Most Consultants Ignore
Internal links are free, powerful, and almost no one uses them strategically. Here is how to build an internal linking structure that compounds your SEO authority.
Table of contents
The Underrated Power of Internal Links
External links (other sites linking to you) get all the attention in SEO discussions. Internal links — links between pages on your own site — get almost none.
This is backwards.
Internal links pass authority between your pages, signal topical relationships to Google, and keep visitors on your site longer. Done well, they can significantly accelerate rankings without any outreach or link-building effort.
The Hub-and-Spoke Model
The most effective internal linking structure mirrors the pillar-cluster content model:
Hub pages (your pillar pages): Linked to from many cluster pages. Receive concentrated authority.
Spoke pages (your cluster pages): Link back to the hub and to related cluster pages. Build a web of topical relevance.
The goal is that every page on your site links to and from at least 3–5 other pages. No orphan pages.
How to Audit Your Current Internal Links
If your site has been around for a year or more, you likely have content with no internal links — orphan pages that Google has trouble finding and ranking.
To find them: use a tool like Screaming Frog or Ahrefs site audit. Filter for pages with 0 internal links. These are your highest-leverage quick wins — add 2–3 internal links to each one.
The Contextual Link Rule
Don't just link to pages at the end of articles ("See also:"). Link contextually — within the body text, where the link naturally supports the reader's understanding.
"To rank your pillar content faster, read our guide to [topical authority]" is more powerful than a sidebar "Related posts" link.
Contextual links tell Google the pages are topically related. They also get more clicks, which is a behavioral signal in your favor.
