How to Set Up Proper Marketing Attribution (Without Enterprise Software)

Understanding which marketing activities produce clients is fundamental. Here is a simple attribution system that works without a $50k analytics platform.

The Attribution Problem

Most consultants and small agencies have no idea which marketing activities produce clients. They know which clients they have. They do not know which touch points, which content pieces, or which channels brought those clients to them.

Without attribution, marketing budget decisions are guesswork. With even a simple attribution system, they become data-driven.

The Simple Attribution System

This system requires: a CRM (even a spreadsheet), a standard question in your discovery process, and UTM parameters on your outbound links.

Step 1: UTM parameters on all links UTM parameters are tags added to URLs that tell Google Analytics where traffic came from. Every link you share — in newsletters, LinkedIn posts, podcast CTAs — should have UTM tags so you can see in GA4 which specific activities drove traffic and conversions.

Format: yoursite.com/lead-magnet?utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=march-2026

Step 2: The standard discovery question Ask every new inquiry and every new client: "How did you find me, and what made you decide to reach out now?"

Record the answer in your CRM. After 20–30 data points, patterns emerge.

Step 3: The monthly attribution review Once per month, look at: which UTM sources drove the most lead magnet downloads, which sources drove the most contact form submissions, and what your clients reported as their discovery path.

The combination of quantitative (UTM) and qualitative (direct question) data gives you a more complete picture than either alone.

What to Do With Attribution Data

When the data consistently shows that LinkedIn posts drive more qualified leads than email campaigns, invest more in LinkedIn. When a specific type of content drives 40% of your discovery calls, publish more of it. Attribution turns a hunch into a repeatable system.
