Personal Brand vs. Company Brand: Which Should Consultants Build First?

Should you build your personal LinkedIn presence or your company page? The data has a clear answer — and most consultants are doing it backwards.

The Question Everyone Gets Wrong

When a consultant starts building their online presence, they face a common fork: do I build a personal brand on LinkedIn or invest in a company LinkedIn page and website?

The answer, for almost all solo and boutique consultants, is personal brand — decisively and first.

Why Personal Beats Company for Consultants

Reason 1: People hire people Consulting is relationship-driven. When a client hires a consulting firm, they are almost always hiring the individual they trust — not the company. Your personal LinkedIn profile is the closest thing to a first impression.

Reason 2: LinkedIn's algorithm heavily favors personal content A post from a personal LinkedIn profile reaches 5–10x more people than the same post from a company page, for the same follower count. LinkedIn's algorithm was designed to amplify people, not brands.

Reason 3: Company pages are trust dead ends When someone finds your company page, they look for the people behind it. If your personal profile is thin, you've lost them. The personal profile is always the destination — the company page is just a detour.

Reason 4: Personal brands compound A personal brand you build over 3 years follows you wherever your business goes. A company brand is tied to that entity — if you pivot, merge, or rebrand, you restart.

When Company Brand Matters

Company brand matters when:

  • You have a team larger than 2–3 people (clients want to know who else works there)
  • Your offering is genuinely product-like, not service-like
  • Your exit strategy involves selling the business, not the expertise

For almost all solo consultants and boutique agencies, build personal first. Add company when you have a team that deserves their own platform.
