Podcast SEO: How to Get Your Show Found by Your Ideal Audience
Most podcasters rely on directory browsing and word of mouth. Here is the SEO system that makes your podcast discoverable to people actively searching for what you cover.

Why Most Podcasts Are Invisible
The majority of podcast discovery happens through: a personal recommendation, a search in Spotify or Apple Podcasts, or a web search for specific information.
Most podcasters optimize for none of these. They create a show, list it in directories, and hope listeners find it.
The podcast SEO system changes this by making every episode discoverable through search — both in podcast directories and on Google.
Show-Level SEO
Before the first episode, optimize at the show level:
Show title: Include your primary keyword phrase if it fits naturally. "The B2B Content Marketing Podcast" ranks for "b2b content marketing podcast" searches. "The Compass" does not rank for anything.
Show description: Write 150–300 words that describe the show's topic using the natural language your ideal listener would search. Include 5–7 natural keyword phrases.
Category selection: Choose the most specific category available in each directory — more specific = less competition.
Episode-Level SEO
Each episode is a potential search result:
Episode title: Include the specific topic your ideal listener would search for. "Email Deliverability With [Guest Name]" is less searchable than "Why Your Emails Go to Spam — And The Fix With [Guest Name]."
Show notes: Write full show notes of 400–600 words per episode. Include the key takeaways, timestamps, and naturally-placed keyword phrases. These notes are indexed by Google.
Episode transcripts: Full transcripts provide maximum text for search indexing. Tools like Descript and Otter.ai make this affordable.
The Cross-Platform Advantage
Podcast SEO extends beyond podcast directories. Show notes on your website, YouTube video versions of audio episodes, and LinkedIn posts summarizing episode insights all create multiple search entry points for the same content.
