Social Media Metrics That Actually Matter (And 5 You Should Ignore)
Most social media dashboards are full of vanity metrics. Here are the metrics that correlate with business outcomes — and the ones that do not.

The Vanity Metric Problem
Social media platforms surface metrics that make them look impressive and make creators feel successful: total impressions, total followers, total likes. These metrics are designed to increase platform engagement. They are not designed to tell you whether your social media is producing business results.
The metrics that matter for business are different — and they are harder to find.
Metrics That Correlate With Business Outcomes
Inbound DMs from ideal prospects: The most direct business signal. When your content generates direct messages from people who look like your ideal clients, it is working.
Profile visits: People who visit your profile after seeing content are actively interested enough to investigate. Track this trend over time.
Content saves: A save signal means "I want to come back to this." Unlike a like (which is often reflexive), a save reflects genuine value.
Email list growth from social: How many social followers become email subscribers? Email subscribers are 10x more likely to convert to buyers than social followers.
Discovery call mentions: Ask every prospect "how did you find me?" Tracking how many mention specific social platforms or content pieces reveals actual attribution.
Metrics That Sound Important But Are Not
Total impressions: Includes ghost impressions — posts served to people who scrolled past in milliseconds.
Total followers: A count of people who clicked a button; says nothing about whether they read your content or will ever buy.
Follower growth rate: Optimizing for follower growth produces content designed to attract followers, which is different from content designed to attract buyers.
Post likes: Lowest-friction engagement signal; weakly correlated with business outcomes.
Reach: How many accounts your content was shown to — not how many paid attention.
