The Tagline Formula: How to Write a One-Line Brand Statement That Works
Most taglines are forgettable or meaningless. Here is the formula for a tagline that communicates your positioning clearly and sticks in the memory.
Table of contents
The Tagline Problem
"We help businesses grow." "Driving results that matter." "Your partner in success."
These taglines are useless. They say nothing differentiating, nothing specific, and nothing memorable. They are the result of trying to appeal to everyone, which results in appealing to no one.
A good tagline communicates, in one line, who you serve, what you do for them, and what makes you different. That is a lot to fit in one line — which is why most taglines fail.
The Tagline Formula
The most effective positioning taglines follow a simple structure:
[Specific audience] + [specific outcome] + [implied differentiator]
Examples:
- —"Content systems for B2B consultants who are done with guesswork" (audience: B2B consultants; outcome: clear content systems; differentiator: data-driven, not random)
- —"SEO for SaaS companies that need pipeline, not just traffic" (audience: SaaS; outcome: pipeline; differentiator: revenue-focused, not vanity-metric-focused)
- —"Marketing strategy for professional services firms that are ready to stop competing on price" (audience: professional services; outcome: positioning above price competition; differentiator: premium positioning)
Notice what these do not contain: "innovative," "results-driven," "passionate," "leading," or "world-class." These words are so overused they have become signals of unclear positioning.
Testing Your Tagline
Show your tagline to five people outside your business. Ask them:
- —Who does this serve?
- —What does this person or company do?
- —What makes them different from alternatives?
If they cannot answer all three accurately, the tagline needs revision. If they can, it is working.
