The Annual Planning Framework for Solo Consultants

Most consultants approach a new year reactively. This annual planning framework builds a proactive 12-month roadmap that keeps growth intentional.

Why Most Consultants Do Not Plan (And Why They Should)

Solo consultants resist formal planning for predictable reasons: work is unpredictable, client needs change, and planning feels like a corporate ritual that does not apply to a one-person business.

But the alternative — reactive, unstructured growth — is worse. Businesses that do not plan rarely grow intentionally. They grow or shrink based on what happens to them, not what they choose.

A one-day annual planning process produces clarity, intentionality, and a decision framework that makes every month's choices easier.

The Annual Planning Framework

Part 1: The Year in Review (2 hours) What went well? What did not? What would you do differently? Who were your best clients, and what made them best? What types of work energized you, and what drained you?

The goal is pattern recognition — identifying what to do more of and what to eliminate.

Part 2: The Revenue Architecture (1 hour) What is your revenue target for the coming year? Break it into: how many clients, at what average value, through which offer types. This makes the target concrete and gives you a clear picture of what needs to be true for you to hit it.

Part 3: The Constraint Analysis (1 hour) What is the single biggest constraint between where you are and where you want to be? Is it lead generation? Conversion? Capacity? Pricing? Identify the constraint before building the plan.

Part 4: The 90-Day Action Plan (1 hour) Plans that extend more than 90 days rarely survive contact with reality. Build a detailed plan for the next 90 days. For months 4–12, set quarterly milestones only.

Part 5: The "Stop Doing" List (30 minutes) The most powerful part of any annual plan. What will you stop doing? Which clients, offer types, activities, and commitments will you consciously exit? Growth requires both addition and subtraction.
