Scaling Past $300k as a Solo Consultant: What Changes and What Does Not
The path from $100k to $300k in consulting revenue is well-documented. The path beyond $300k solo requires different thinking. Here is what actually changes.

The $300k Ceiling
Most solo consultants hit a ceiling around $250k–$350k. Beyond this point, growth requires either working more hours (unsustainable) or changing the business model.
The consultants who break through this ceiling do so through a combination of rate increases, offer architecture changes, and leverage strategies — not by working harder.
What Changes at $300k+
Rate structure changes: At $300k+ as a solo consultant, you are likely billing $15k–25k/month per client or charging daily rates of $3,000–$5,000. This requires positioning that justifies premium rates — typically deep specialization, a demonstrable track record of significant outcomes, and demand that exceeds supply.
Client type changes: The clients who pay premium rates are typically larger organizations with more complex problems and longer sales cycles. Business development becomes more relationship-driven and less volume-driven.
Offer architecture changes: The most successful $300k+ solo consultants typically have two or three complementary offers: a high-ticket retained engagement, a productized advisory relationship, and a scalable product (course, group program, or digital product) that serves clients who cannot yet afford the retained engagement.
What Does Not Change
The quality requirement: Premium rates require premium outcomes. The consultants who break $300k solo are almost always genuinely excellent at their work, with a track record that supports the pricing.
The content requirement: Visibility and authority still require consistent publishing. If anything, the quality bar for content goes up as the positioning moves up-market.
The relationship requirement: At this level, every significant engagement comes through a relationship — either directly with the client or through a trusted referral. Transactional business development does not work here.
