The Vanity Metric Trap on LinkedIn

Impressions. Reactions. Reposts. LinkedIn gives you a wealth of engagement data, and most of it is vanity metrics that feel good and tell you very little about whether your content is building your business.

Here are the four metrics that actually matter.

Metric 1: Profile Views from Ideal Clients

Not total profile views — views from people who match your ICP. LinkedIn shows you who viewed your profile (for premium users) or gives aggregate data (for basic users).

Look for: are your viewers the right people? If you're targeting SaaS founders and your profile is being viewed by job seekers, something in your content positioning needs adjustment.

Metric 2: Follower Quality

Your follower count is less important than who's following you. Monthly, look at your newest followers: are they your ICP? If your follower growth is all bots and random accounts, your content is being seen by the wrong people.

Engaged followers who match your ICP are worth 10x the number of random followers.

Metric 3: Comment Quality

Not comment quantity — quality. Are people leaving substantive comments that engage with your ideas? Are they asking follow-up questions? Tagging peers?

Comments from your ICP indicate your content is resonating with the right people. Mass reactions from random profiles indicate reach without relevance.

Metric 4: Discovery Call Attribution

The only metric that directly connects LinkedIn to revenue: how many of your discovery calls came from or were warmed by LinkedIn?

Ask every new client or call booking: "How did you find me?" and "What made you reach out?" LinkedIn attribution tells you whether your content is doing the job of pipeline generation.

The Weekly Review (5 Minutes)

Every Monday, look at: new followers (quality), best performing post (why?), profile views (who?). That's it. Don't spend more than 5 minutes on analytics — spend the rest of the time creating.
