SEO Analytics: How to Know if Your Content Is Actually Working

Traffic is not the goal. Revenue is. Here is how to set up SEO analytics that tell you whether your content is producing business outcomes, not just page views.

The Traffic Illusion in SEO

Many consultants and agencies report SEO success in terms of traffic: organic sessions up 40%, page views doubled, impressions tripled. These numbers sound good. They say nothing about whether the content is producing business results.

The SEO analytics setup that actually matters connects traffic to leads to revenue — not just traffic to page views.

The SEO Analytics Stack

Layer 1: Google Search Console What keywords are driving impressions and clicks? Which pages are ranking and for what queries? Search Console shows you the search-engine view of your content — which queries surface your pages, and whether people click.

Key metric to watch: Click-Through Rate (CTR) by query. A query with high impressions and low CTR means you are visible but your title or meta description is not compelling enough to earn the click.

Layer 2: Google Analytics 4 (linked to Search Console) Once a visitor arrives from search, what do they do? Do they read the full article? Do they click to the lead magnet? Do they convert?

GA4 + Search Console linked data lets you see which search queries drive not just traffic but conversions.

Layer 3: CRM Attribution When a new lead arrives, tag them with their first-touch source. When a lead converts to a client, you have a closed-loop view: this client found you by searching for [keyword], landed on [article], downloaded [lead magnet], and became a client 90 days later.

The Monthly SEO Review

30 minutes per month: rank changes for your 20 target keywords, traffic trend by page, conversion rate by landing page, and closed revenue attributed to organic. This monthly check-in is enough to make informed decisions without becoming a full-time analyst.
