The Specificity Principle: Why Vague Copy Fails and How to Fix It

Vague copy loses readers. Specific copy wins them. Here is how to inject specificity into every piece of content you write.

The Vagueness Epidemic

"I help businesses grow." "We deliver results." "Take your marketing to the next level."

These phrases appear on thousands of websites, LinkedIn profiles, and email campaigns. They communicate nothing and convert nothing.

The problem is not bad writing — it's vagueness. When you write specifically, readers see themselves in your copy. When you write vaguely, they scroll past.

Why Specificity Works

Vague: "Many clients see great results." Specific: "6 out of 8 clients in 2024 increased their LinkedIn engagement by 40–70% within 90 days."

The specific version does two things the vague version cannot: it creates credibility (numbers signal real data) and it creates a vivid picture in the reader's mind.

Readers buy pictures, not abstractions.

The Specificity Audit

Take any piece of copy you have written. Run the specificity audit:

  1. Replace any instance of "many," "some," "often," "several," "most" with a number or a name.
  2. Replace any outcome claim ("get results," "grow your business") with a specific outcome ("add 3 inbound leads per week," "close a $10k retainer in 90 days").
  3. Replace any vague time reference ("quickly," "soon," "in no time") with a specific timeframe ("in 30 days," "within 2 weeks").

This single pass will typically double the effectiveness of existing copy.

Building the Specificity Habit

The easiest way to write specifically is to write from experience first, then generalize.

Instead of: "Clients often struggle with content consistency." Write: "One client I worked with last quarter had published exactly 2 LinkedIn posts in 6 months. Within 8 weeks, she was publishing 3x per week."

Start with the real, specific thing — then draw the lesson. The specific story makes the lesson credible.
