Starting a Podcast in 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

Podcasting has never been more competitive or more accessible. Here is the honest assessment of whether starting a podcast makes sense for your business.

The Podcast Saturation Question

There are over 4 million podcasts. Most new podcasters abandon their show within 7 episodes. The market is saturated by volume but not by quality in most niches.

Whether starting a podcast is worth it depends entirely on what you expect it to produce and whether you can produce a show that is genuinely better than what already exists for your target audience.

What Podcasting Is Actually Good For

Network building: Having a podcast gives you a reason to reach out to anyone in your field. "I would love to have you on my podcast" is an asymmetric ask that opens doors a cold email cannot.

Content depth: Podcasts allow 30–60 minutes of substantive discussion on topics that would take 10,000 words to cover in text. For topics where depth is the differentiator, audio is the right medium.

Audience intimacy: Podcast listeners develop a parasocial intimacy with hosts that is deeper than most content relationships. Regular listeners feel they know you.

SEO support: Podcast transcripts and show notes create textual content that supports organic search.

What Podcasting Is Not Good For

Fast audience growth. Direct lead generation. Revenue in the first 12 months.

Podcasting is a long game — typically 18–24 months before meaningful business results emerge. It works through compounding intimacy and authority, not through immediate conversion.

The Decision Framework

Start a podcast if: you are committed to 12+ months of consistent publishing, you genuinely enjoy conversation as a format, you have a specific audience in mind that is currently underserved by existing podcasts, and you have identified a unique angle or format.

Do not start a podcast if: you are looking for quick revenue, you dislike the format, or you plan to stop when results are slow to materialize.
